Termite-Tapeworm-Fungus-Moss Art

26 Jun

My second quote for this week is from Manny Farber:

A peculiar fact about termite-tapeworm-fungus-moss art is that it goes always forward eating its own boundaries, and, likely as not, leaves nothing in its path other than the signs of eager, industrious, unkempt activity.

Implicit in Farber’s quote is his assumption that the termite artist is familiar with its boundaries.  Quite often, we seek to break the rules without first knowing the rules.

It’s tempting to pervert this quote as an excuse for laziness and ignorance. Rather, the goal is to learn all about one’s boundaries and organically eat one’s way beyond, leaving behind a well-trodden, unique, personal path!
